THANK YOU!!!

To everyone who supported "A Shot for Marnie" Jamboree:

From myself and all the organizers of the “Shot for Marnie” tournament, a very heart felt thank you for making the tournament such a success.  When we started organizing this tournament, we had one goal in mind – to raise money for Marnie and her family.  With the help of all of you, we raised so much more than we ever expected.  But also with your help, we did a whole lot more than we ever expected.  We turned the “hockey tournament” into a “celebration of Marnie’s life”.  Never did we expect Marnie to be able to come for most of the day, and we certainly never expected to see her skate!!!!  Her husband Tom sent me a text yesterday, as she was getting chemo, that she felt so high on Sunday that he honestly thought that “she could fly”!!  We want to thank you all for coming together to take part in what turned out to be a celebration of Marnie’s life, as well as a celebration of friendship, comradry, compassion and generosity all rolled into one.  Every single person should feel good about themselves for being part of this.  On Sunday, we were all one team, and together, we all won.

Marnie’s children are very young, but I have to believe they will never forget what they saw on Sunday, September 11, 2011.  They have seen their mother very sick for awhile now, and I’m sure they have had their own young ups and downs.  But even at their ages, and as they grow older, I have to believe that day will be etched in their minds forever.  They got to see hundreds of people turn out not to feel sorry for their mother, but to pay tribute to her, by playing a sport that they themselves love to play and watch.  They got to watch a Boston Bruin come in honor of their mother.  They got to watch their mother skate as a throng of people cheered her on.  They got to watch two of the teams she plays for all wearing pinnies with her number - #24 – on them – play a final game at the end of the night while they sat with their family in the score box and kept score and announced the game.  They got to see person after person come up to their mother and embrace her and tell her that they are thinking of her and supporting her.  I can only imagine how good that must have felt – to know that your mother is loved by so many, even by people who had just met her.  They may not understand a lot, but they do understand kindness and love, and they saw it in abundance on Sunday.

The tournament went from before 7 am to close to past 11 pm – and Marnie and her family were there for most of it.  We kept asking her if she wanted to go back to the hotel room we had gotten her, to take a rest, and she kept saying “I wouldn’t miss any of this for anything”.  She pushed herself beyond anything anyone thought she was capable of.  She pushed herself because she felt surrounded by a blanket of love and support and for that one day, she felt on top of the world.  To all of you who helped make that happen – on Sunday, September 11, 2011 - you made a difference.

With love,
"A Shot for Marnie"!!!
